Fireworks season is upon us, and while they’re dazzling to watch, they can be stressful for our furry friends.

Due to their sensitive hearing, the loud noises and bright lights can cause anxiety and fear in dogs. But with a bit of planning, you can help your dog stay calm and safe during these displays. Here are some tips to help:

1. Create a Cozy Safe Space

Set up a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your dog can feel secure. Include their bed, blankets, and favorite toys. Adding something with your scent can provide extra comfort and reassurance.

2. Tire Them Out

Take your dog for a long walk earlier in the day to help them release energy, so they’re more likely to rest in the evening.

3. Keep Them Indoors

During firework displays, keep your dog safely indoors with windows and curtains closed to block out the sights and sounds.

4. Provide a Distraction

Engage your dog with toys, interactive games, or a long-lasting chew to divert their attention from the fireworks. We find that Yak Chews work wonders for keeping our dogs entertained!

5. Play Calming Music

Play soothing music or use a dog-friendly playlist. Classic FM even offers an annual “Pet Classics” show on Bonfire Night to help pets stay relaxed.

6. Try Natural Calming Aids

Consider using a natural calming supplement to help ease your dog’s nerves. If your dog has a history of severe anxiety, it may also be worth consulting your vet about additional support or anxiety medication.

7. Stay Calm and Reassuring

Dogs are sensitive to their owner’s emotions, so try to stay calm and positive. Offering gentle reassurance can go a long way toward helping them feel safe.

By planning ahead, you can help your dog feel more comfortable and calm during this potentially stressful season. Fireworks don’t have to be a source of fear—with the right support, your dog can feel more at ease.
